“The Word, the Bani, is Guru, and the Guru is the Bani. Within the Bani, all the Ambrosial Nectar is contained. If His humble servant believes in it and acts according to the Guru’s Words, the Guru Himself emancipates him.”
(Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 982)
“Those who do not show respect and reverence for Gurbani cannot be considered Sikhs.” (Gurpartap Suraj Granth)
Satguru Ji always showed the highest respect for Gurbani in all His ten forms. As Sikhs, we should strive to follow this example, even when engaging with Gurbani through modern devices. The following practices can help maintain proper respect:
Purity and cleanliness: Wash your hands before reading Gurbani from a laptop, smartphone, or any digital device. Avoid eating or drinking while reading or listening, as it diminishes the sacredness of the practice.
Respectful positioning: When listening to Gurbani through a radio, CD, DVD, or digital device, place the device on a raised platform higher than your seating level, showing honor to the Gurbani being recited.
Elevate your device: Never place laptops or smartphones directly on the floor. Use a stand, cushion, or folded cloth to raise it above the ground or the level where you are seated.
Traditional observances: If reciting Paatth (such as Nitnem, Sukhmani Sahib, etc.) from a digital device, remove your shoes and ensure your head is covered, aligning with the traditional respect shown during Gurbani recitation.
Mindful usage: Modern devices can be used for both good and harmful purposes. Stay vigilant and disciplined in how you use phones, laptops, or other technology, ensuring they deepen your connection with the sacred Word rather than distract from it.
By following these simple yet meaningful practices, we can honor Gurbani while embracing the convenience of digital technology.
