What is meant by Dharam di Kirt karni?

This is a very important Bachan by Guru Gobind Singh ji: ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਨੀ. It means to earn one’s livelihood in ways that are in harmony with Gurmat. When reflecting on Dharam Dee Kirat, the following points come to mind:

  1. One must earn through honest and truthful means.

  2. Not every occupation that can be pursued honestly is necessarily aligned with Gurmat. A profession should be chosen in such a way that it does not clash with Gurmat principles. For example, someone may trade in tobacco through fair means, but this still does not qualify as Gurmat Kirat. Any work that involves tobacco, liquor, meat, drugs, or similar is not in line with Gurmat, and therefore cannot be considered Dharam Di Kirat.

  3. Do not be a Loon-Haraami (Namak-Haraami). In other words, do not deceive your employer. Fulfill the duties for which you are paid with honesty, sincerity, and diligence.

  4. A true Gurmat Kirat is one where, while carrying out your work, you also keep your mind in remembrance of Naam and recite Gurbani.

  5. From one’s honest earnings, Daswandh must be set aside. Dasvand should be used for the Parchaar of Khalsa Panth. If someone wants to make donations to other charities that is fine but it would have to be separate than your Dasvand.

  6. Without Dharam Dee Kirat, one cannot truly walk the path of Gurmat Prema Bhagti.
