Do Sikhs believe in reincarnation / afterlife?

In Sikhi, life is seen as a cycle of birth and death, called Janam-Maran. Every living being is born, lives, dies, and is reborn into a new body. This cycle continues based on one’s actions, or karam. Good deeds and living in harmony with Vaheguru’s will can lead the soul closer to liberation, while actions rooted in ego and selfishness keep the cycle going.

Vaheguru is fair and compassionate. Through divine justice and grace, every soul is given opportunities through rebirth to learn, grow, and ultimately unite with Vaheguru. With the guidance of the Satguru, a Sikh can live according to Hukam, letting go of ego and attachments, and experience union with Vaheguru now and forever.

  1. The cycle of birth and death: All living beings are part of a cycle of birth and death (Janam-Maran). When someone dies, they are reborn into another body based on their actions (karam).
  2. Divine justice and grace: Vaheguru is fair and compassionate, giving every soul chances through rebirth to reach liberation. With Vaheguru’s grace and the Satguru’s guidance, living in harmony with Hukam removes ego and unites us with Vaheguru – now and forever.
  3. Forgetting past lives: The transition between lives can be intense, so the mind usually blocks past-life memories to prevent confusion or distress, although some spiritually advanced individuals are believed to remember previous lives clearly.
  4. Evidence from research: Ian Stevenson (formerly of the University of Virginia) studied many children around the world who claimed memories of past lives. He gathered thousands of such cases. He concluded that reincarnation is a very strong explanation for the facts in many of these cases.
  5. Past-life tendencies: Many abilities and memories are carried from past lives, such as being born with musical or academic genius, knowing things without being taught, feeling instant connections with people you’ve never met, or having knowledge no one else could know, which cannot be explained without the reality of reincarnation.
