Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji (1878–1961) was a renowned freedom fighter, reformer, theologian, and a key figure in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. He was also the first person to be imprisoned during the Gurdwara Reform Movement.
In the early decades of the 20th century, when the hope of freedom seemed like a distant dream and the moral, spiritual, and political fabric of the nation had begun to weaken, Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji emerged as a radiant light in a time of darkness. He was a spiritual visionary who did not rely on mere words or sermons, but poured out his experiences and divine love through the sacred verses of Gurbani. As a reformer, he brought change not by preaching, but by becoming the change himself. As a revolutionary, he gave up the comfort and status of an elite background and fearlessly stepped into one of the boldest struggles against British rule, at a time when even the bravest of political leaders were hesitant to act.
No one who met Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji could forget the power of his presence. His glowing face, saintly beard, broad forehead, and deep, intense eyes gave him a majestic and spiritual appearance. His gaze carried depth and meaning. At times, it sparkled with gentle irony or compassion. At other times, it became still, absorbed in divine ecstasy, as if reaching into the deepest levels of consciousness. His presence left a lasting impression on all who were blessed to witness it.
For more than fifteen years, from May 1915 to October 1930, Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji was imprisoned for his involvement in the Ghadr Movement, a courageous revolt for India’s freedom. He endured a terrible and torturous prison life with unshakable spiritual strength. Upon his release, he was honoured with great respect in the form of Hukamnamas and Siropas from all four Takhats that existed at the time.
History will bear witness to the truth that the bones and blood of these true freedom fighters enriched the barren soil of their country’s political field. It is a tragedy that those who later enjoyed the fruits of their sacrifices, and those who now wear the crowns crafted from the legacy of these heroes, have consciously and carelessly forgotten the ones who bore the weight of freedom and carried it to the heights of liberation. But history, the greatest and final judge, will never forget them.
