In Gurbani, many letters have special pronunciation marks beneath them, such as the Udaat symbol, the yakash symbol, etc.
When these symbols are present, the pronunciation of the word changes.
(1) Udaat

In lines (1) and (2), the word ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿ has the Udaat symbol beneath it, which gives the meaning “to tie”.
In lines (3) and (4), the word ਬੰਨਿ does not visibly have this symbol, but the meaning is still “to tie”.
Therefore, for correct pronunciation, it should still be read as ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿ, with the halant pronunciation applied.
The meaning of the Udaat symbol is that the letter beneath which it appears should be pronounced with a very subtle ‘h’ sound mixed into it.

In line (5), ਬੰਨਾ means support or shelter.
In line (6), ਬੰਨਾ means riverbank or edge.
Because of these meanings, the Udaat symbol is not used in these two cases.
(2) ‘ਹ’ symbol
Where a word is related to bathing or cleansing (ishnaan), a half ‘ਹ’ sound should be pronounced beneath the letter ਨ.

In line (7), the words ਨਾਵਾ and ਨਾਇ should be pronounced as ਨ੍ਹਾਵਾਂ and ਨ੍ਹਾਇ, with a half ‘h’ sound.
Similarly, in lines (8), (9), and (10), the pronunciation becomes ਨ੍ਹਾਉ, ਨ੍ਹਾਤੇ, and ਨ੍ਹਾਤੀ.
However, in line (11), ਨਾਤੀ means grandson, so the half ‘ਹ’ sound is not pronounced.
Likewise, in line (12) (ਨਾਇ) and line (13) (ਨਾਉ), the meaning is Naam (Name of Vaheguru), not bathing, so the ‘ਹ’ symbol is not pronounced.
Other similar examples include:
ਪੜਿਆ / ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ, ਚੋਲਾ / ਚੋਲ੍ਹਾ, ਕਲ / ਕਲ੍ਹ, ਸਰਾ / ਸਰ੍ਹਾ, etc.
(3) Yakash symbol
The yakash symbol indicates the pronunciation of a half ‘y’ sound.

Words like ਅਖਾਦੵਿ , ਖਾਦੵੰ , ਅਸਾਜੵੰ , ਰਖੵਾ , ਨਖੵਤ੍ਰ , ਜੋਤੵਿੰ must be pronounced with the yakash symbol, otherwise, the reading and meaning will be incorrect.
(4) Visarga ( : )
The visarga ( : ) is a letter from the Sanskrit (and Hindi) alphabet.
It is pronounced like a soft or half ‘ਹ’ sound.
In Sanskrit grammar, when a word ends with visarga (:) or ‘ਹ’, the ਹ is always written with mukta (no vowel sign).

The word ਬਹਤਰਿ here is not a Sanskrit word, so Sanskrit pronunciation rules do not apply here.
ਬਹਤਰਿ means seventy-two (72).
