HOUNSLOW, UK — The abduction and sexual abuse of a 16-year-old Sikh girl in Hounslow, West London, has reignited concern among Sikh organizations about grooming gangs and safeguarding failures. Police recovered the girl from a flat after urgent fears were raised by her family and members of the Sikh community. A Pakistani Muslim man in his early 40s was arrested in connection with the case and is suspected of arranging further abuse.
Sikh organizations say the case reflects patterns highlighted in previous UK grooming-gang prosecutions, including Rotherham, Rochdale and Telford, where large numbers of girls were abused by networks of Muslim men, predominantly of Pakistani heritage. Campaigners argue that safeguarding discussions must include examination of troubling Islamic ideological and cultural beliefs that have been cited in studies of grooming gangs.

Community members criticized what they described as slow police action, which they argue is due to fears of being labelled Islamophobic or receiving a backlash from the Pakistani Muslim community. Hundreds of Sikhs gathered outside the flat demanding intervention before police arrested the suspect and the girl was reunited with her family. Neighbors later alleged inappropriate behavior around young girls. One neighbor citing she had seen the perpetrator with a child who appeared to be no older than 12.
Following longstanding criticism and pressure from people across the country, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer finally announced a national inquiry into grooming gangs in June 2025. Sikh organizations including the Sikh Press Association and Sikh Youth UK say gaps in safeguarding remain and stress that child protection must take priority over political sensitivities to prevent further abuse.

ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਯੂ.ਕੇ. ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਏ ਗਰੂਮਿੰਗ ਗੈਂਗ ਮਾਮਲਿਆਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਰੋਥਰਹਮ, ਰੌਚਡੇਲ ਅਤੇ ਟੈਲਫੋਰਡ, ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਜੁਲਦੇ ਰੁਝਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੈਂਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਸਨ, ਦੁਰਵਿਵਹਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਬਾਰੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਕ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਧਾਰਣਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਗਰੂਮਿੰਗ ਗੈਂਗਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਅਧਿਐਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਈਸਾਈ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਡਾ. ਮਾਰਕ ਡਿਊਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਪੀੜਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਵਾਹੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਦਰਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੁਝ ਅਪਰਾਧੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਪਰਾਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਠਹਿਰਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ:
ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਗੈਰ-ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਧਾਰਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਆਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਦ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਦਲੀਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੜ-ਮੁੜ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਾਨੀਕਾਰਕ ਵਿਆਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਖੰਡਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਸਮੀਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਮਿਊਨਿਟੀ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀ ਧੀਮੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਦੀ ਆਲੋਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ “ਇਸਲਾਮੋਫੋਬਿਕ” ਕਹੇ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਜਾਂ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨੀ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਕਮਿਊਨਿਟੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਦੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਿਤ ਡਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸੈਂਕੜਿਆਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਫਲੈਟ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਦਖਲ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸ਼ੱਕੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੁੜੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ। ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜੋਸੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਸ-ਪਾਸ ਗਲਤ ਵਰਤਾਅ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਵੀ ਲਗਾਏ। ਇੱਕ ਪੜੋਸੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਨਾਲ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਲਗਭਗ 12 ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਤੋਂ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਆਲੋਚਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਦਬਾਅ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਯੂ.ਕੇ. ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਕੀਅਰ ਸਟਾਰਮਰ ਨੇ ਜੂਨ 2025 ਵਿੱਚ ਗਰੂਮਿੰਗ ਗੈਂਗਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਦਾ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਿੱਖ ਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਐਸੋਸੀਏਸ਼ਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਯੂਥ ਯੂ.ਕੇ. ਸਮੇਤ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਖਾਮੀਆਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਰੋਕਣ ਅਤੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਵੀ ਮਜ਼ਬ ਦੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਂ ਕੌਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਰਾਜ਼ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਉੱਠਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਕੜੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕਰਨੀ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਹੈ ।
