Tehran, Iran — Rising tensions in the ongoing US–Israel confrontation involving Iran have created deep uncertainty for the small Sikh presence in the Iranian capital, with communication lines to the community now largely silent.
Sources speaking to Sikh Samachar (SS News) report that no direct contact has been established with Sikh residents in Tehran since the escalation of hostilities. However, SS News has obtained an audio message recorded on 2 March by a Sikh currently living in Tehran. The recording provides a personal update on the situation, and readers are encouraged to listen to the audio to hear the ground reality directly from a member of the sangat.
The Sikh population in Tehran is extremely limited, believed to number fewer than one hundred individuals, and forms part of the broader Indian community in Iran. For generations, the Bhai Ganga Singh Sabha Gurdwara, founded in 1941, has served as the spiritual heart of Sikh life in the country. Beyond being a place of worship, the Gurdwara has long acted as a hub for community gatherings, seva, and support for travellers and residents alike.
Historically, Iranian authorities and society have shown notable respect toward the Sikh faith. The community has been permitted to display the Nishan Sahib openly outside the Gurdwara, a privilege that in recent years has faced restrictions in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Sikh entrepreneur Amardeep Singh Anand, presently in India, told SS News that his last confirmed contact with friends in Tehran occurred when the conflict first began. At that time, the Gurdwara remained operational. Since then, attempts to reconnect have been unsuccessful. He suspects that members of the Sikh community may have sought safety within the Gurdwara complex or relocated temporarily away from the capital.
Meanwhile, Kendriya Vidyalaya–Tehran, attended by Sikh and other Indian students, was functioning until the most recent updates, although scheduled board examinations have reportedly been postponed.
Across the global Sikh diaspora, concern is growing as the sangat awaits further news regarding the safety and wellbeing of Sikhs in Tehran during this volatile period.

ਅਨੁਮਾਨ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੇਹਰਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਸੌ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਘੱਟ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹਨ। ਇਥੇ 1941 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਗੰਗਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਭਾ ਕਈ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੁਦਾਇਕ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਸੇਵਾ, ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਇਕੱਠ ਦਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਵੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਰਾਨੀ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਛਾਣ ਦਾ ਆਦਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਲਹਿਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀਮਿਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਿੱਖ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਅਮਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਨੰਦ, ਜੋ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ, ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਖਰੀ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ਾਂ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਮਾਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੁਝ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਾਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਹੋਣਗੇ।
ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਵਿਦਿਆਲਯਾ ਤੇਹਰਾਨ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਬੱਚੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਖਰੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਤੱਕ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਬੋਰਡ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਮੁਲਤਵੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤ ਹੁਣ ਤੇਹਰਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਖੈਰ-ਖ਼ਬਰ ਲਈ ਚਿੰਤਿਤ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
