NEW YORK, USA: A Hindu Indian national has admitted in a US federal court that he participated in a 2023 plot to hire a contract killer to assassinate prominent Sikh activist and lawyer Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual US–Canadian citizen and leader of Sikhs for Justice, an organization campaigning for Khalistan, which is Punjab becoming independent once again and being a sovereign homeland for Sikhs.
Nikhil Gupta, 54, pleaded guilty to charges of murder‑for‑hire, conspiracy, and money laundering. Prosecutors said Gupta, while in India, transferred $15,000 to an individual he believed was a hitman. The supposed assassin was in fact a confidential source working with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, allowing authorities to uncover the plot before any attempt on Pannun’s life. Gupta faces 20 to 24 years in prison, with sentencing set for May 29.
US officials stated that Gupta was recruited by a Vikash Yadav, an Indian government employee who remains at large. Yadav allegedly instructed Gupta to identify and pay someone to kill Pannun, providing personal details including his address and phone numbers. American authorities condemned the scheme, saying Pannun was targeted solely for exercising his constitutionally protected right to free speech.
The case has drawn significant attention from Sikh communities in Canada and the UK, where police have also raised concerns about threats to Sikh activists. Around two dozen supporters attended the New York hearing, carrying yellow Khalistan flags and holding a brief prayer.
Speaking outside court, Pannun described Gupta as “a foot soldier” and urged investigations into those in India who authorized the operation. Rejecting New Delhi’s portrayal of him as a terrorist, he said his peaceful and lawful advocacy focuses on human rights and the democratic right of Punjabis to determine their future.
Pannun vowed to continue his work despite ongoing threats, saying the case underscores both the risks faced by Sikh activists abroad and the resolve of the global Sikh community to defend its rights.

ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਨੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਅਤੇ ਯੂਕੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਵਧੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਾਰਕੁਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਬਾਰੇ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀਆਂ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਲਗਭਗ ਦੋ ਦਰਜਨ ਸਮਰਥਕ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਪੀਲੇ ਝੰਡੇ ਲਹਿਰਾਏ ਅਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਅਦਾਲਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਪੰਨੂੰ ਨੇ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਨੂੰ “ਫੁੱਟ ਸੋਲਜਰ” ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਜ਼ਿਸ਼ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਗੇ ਦਹਿਸ਼ਤਗਰਦੀ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਦੀ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀਪੂਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਨੂੰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਧਮਕੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੰਮ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੇਗਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਉਸਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਮਕਸਦ ਹੈ।
