CHANDIGARH, PUNJAB — Sikh leaders and Punjab’s opposition parties have condemned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for invoking Bhai Kanhaiya Ji during discussions on the SYL Canal, calling it a deeply hurtful misuse of Sikh history to justify what they describe as the ongoing betrayal of Punjab’s river waters.
After meeting Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Mann said Punjabis are “descendants of Bhai Kanhaiya Ji, who gave water even to enemies,” suggesting Punjab should not deny water to Haryana. Sikh voices told SS News that this comparison twists a sacred principle of Sikh compassion into political cover for decisions that endanger Punjab’s survival.
Punjab is the only fully riparian state for the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers. Under widely recognized riparian norms, the state through which a river flows has primary rights over its waters. Yet, Punjab’s waters continue to be diverted to non-riparian states such as Haryana and Rajasthan, a practice Sikh leaders say has no legal basis, violates riparian principles, and has pushed Punjab into severe ecological decline.
Opposition leaders argue that Mann’s remarks attempt to mask this long-standing injustice by invoking a revered Sikh figure whose legacy has nothing to do with inter-state water allocation.
Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition, accused Mann of “morally whitewashing the surrender of Punjab’s lifeline,” saying the CM ignored constitutional protections and Punjab’s environmental crisis. Sukhbir Singh Badal called the reference to Bhai Kanhaiya Ji “outrageous and sacrilegious,” insisting that battlefield sewa cannot be equated with giving away Punjab’s rivers. Former minister Pargat Singh said the remarks had “wounded Sikh sentiments,” describing the use of Bhai Kanhaiya Ji’s name in a political water dispute as a “profound affront to the Sikh Panth.”
Sikh commentators told SS News that Bhai Kanhaiya Ji’s legacy represents universal compassion, not the surrender of a nation’s natural resources, and certainly not the justification for policies that benefit other states while Punjab, the Sikh homeland, bears the environmental and economic cost.
They warned that invoking Sikh history to defend decisions that weaken Punjab’s riparian rights amounts to “betrayal disguised as brotherhood”, and urged the Chief Minister to retract his remarks and reaffirm Punjab’s firm stance on protecting its river waters.
Opposition parties and Sikh organizations continue to demand a public apology and a clear commitment that Punjab’s river rights will not be compromised under the guise of compassion or political symbolism.
ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ, ਪੰਜਾਬ — ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਕੜੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ SYL ਕੈਨਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਭਾਈ ਘਨੱਈਆ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਹਵਾਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦੀ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਗਲਤ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆਈ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ “ਧੋਖੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ” ਨੂੰ ਠੀਕ ਠਹਿਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨਾਇਬ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੈਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ “ਭਾਈ ਘਨੱਈਆ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਵੰਸ਼ਜ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ,” ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੋਕਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ। ਸਿੱਖ ਬੁਲਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਮਾਚਾਰ ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਤੁਲਨਾ ਸਿੱਖ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਢਾਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਰਤਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਬਚਾਅ ਹੀ ਖਤਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਵੀ, ਬਿਆਸ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਦਾ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਿਪੇਰੀਅਨ ਰਾਜ ਹੈ। ਰਿਪੇਰੀਅਨ ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਜਿਸ ਰਾਜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦਰਿਆ ਵਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਹੱਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ ਵਰਗੇ ਗੈਰ-ਰਿਪੇਰੀਅਨ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਮੋੜਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ, ਨਿਯਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਪਰਿਆਵਰਣੀ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਮਾਨ ਦੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਇੱਕ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਨਾਈਂਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਨੂੰ ਓਹਲੇ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਹਨ। ਲੀਡਰ ਆਫ਼ ਓਪੋਜ਼ੀਸ਼ਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਜਵਾ ਨੇ ਮਾਨ ‘ਤੇ “ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨਰੇਖਾ ਛੱਡਣ ਨੂੰ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਰੰਗ ਦੇਣ” ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਾਇਆ। ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਦਲ ਨੇ ਭਾਈ ਘਨੱਈਆ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਹਵਾਲਾ “ਅਪਮਾਨਜਨਕ” ਕਿਹਾ। ਸਾਬਕਾ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਪਰਗਟ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ “ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਟ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ ਹੈ।”
ਸਿੱਖ ਟਿੱਪਣੀਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਮਾਚਾਰ ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਈ ਘਨੱਈਆ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਦਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਸਰੋਤ ਛੱਡਣ ਦੀ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆਈ ਹੱਕ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਕਰਨਾ “ਭਰਾਤਰੀਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਧੋਖਾ” ਹੈ।
ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਮਾਫ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆਈ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
