DELHI, INDIA: Survivors of the 1984 Anti-Sikh Genocide gathered outside a Delhi court on Thursday, expressing anger and despair after former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar was acquitted in a case linked to alleged incitement of violence in Janakpuri and Vikaspuri. Though Kumar remains imprisoned in another genocide-related murder case, Sikh families said the ruling has reopened decades-old wounds.
Nirmal Kaur, who witnessed her father being burned alive as a child, said she has spent 42 years “running from court to court” in search of justice. Others echoed her frustration, insisting they would continue their fight in higher courts.
Survivor Bagi Kaur, who lost ten family members, recalled streets “covered with bodies” during the genocide. She questioned why those accused by eyewitnesses still evade full accountability. Several survivors told SS News they personally witnessed Kumar leading mobs in 1984 and said his acquittal reinforces their belief that justice remains incomplete.
Members of the Sikh community reacting to the verdict told SS News that the ruling has revived long-standing concerns about unequal treatment of Sikhs within India’s justice system. They pointed to Sikh political prisoners who, according to Sikh organizations, remain jailed despite completing sentences, and the detention of Sikh activists under what they describe as questionable use of the National Security Act.
They contrasted this with what they view as leniency shown to individuals accused or convicted in cases involving violence against Sikhs, including repeated paroles granted to the disgraced Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim, convicted of rape and murder. These disparities, they said, reinforce the perception of a two-tier justice system that leaves Sikhs feeling marginalized.
As protesters refused to leave the court complex, survivors said the struggle for justice, 44 years after the genocide, is far from over.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕੌਰ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਬਚਪਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਾ ਸਾੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ, ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ 42 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ “ਅਦਾਲਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਕੱਟ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ” ਪਰ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਇਨਸਾਫ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਹੋਰ ਬਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਹੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾ ਜਤਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉੱਚ ਅਦਾਲਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੜਾਈ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਣਗੇ।
ਬਗੀ ਕੌਰ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਸ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਗੁਆਏ, ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ 1984 ਦੌਰਾਨ “ਗਲੀਆਂ ਲਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀਆਂ ਪਈਆਂ ਸਨ।” ਕਈ ਬਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਮਾਚਾਰ ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਖੁਦ 1984 ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਜਣ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੀੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਬਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਹੋਰ ਟੁੱਟਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਿੱਖ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਮਾਚਾਰ ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਨੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਵਰਤਾਅ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਚਿੰਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਜਗਾਇਆ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੈਦੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਾਰਕੁਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਹੇਠ ਵਿਵਾਦਿਤ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੰਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸਦੀ ਤੁਲਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਰ-ਬਾਰ ਰਾਹਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ — ਜਿਵੇਂ ਡੇਰਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਰਾਮ ਰਹੀਮ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਪੈਰੋਲ ਮਿਲੀ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਬਲਾਤਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਕਤਲ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਤਫ਼ਾਵਤਾਂ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, “ਦੋਹਰੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ” ਦੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਅਦਾਲਤ ਕੰਪਲੈਕਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਡਟੇ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ 44 ਸਾਲ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਇਨਸਾਫ਼ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਖਤਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ।
