LUDHIANA, PUNJAB: Ranjodh Singh, a young Sikh Uber driver, was brutally assaulted by police personnel on the night of January 26 after a minor traffic collision, allegedly triggered by a Photo of Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale displayed on his car. He sustained injuries to his back, ribs, head, feet, and fingers, and says he was unable to walk immediately afterward. He alleges he was dragged, beaten with sticks while restrained on the cold ground, and verbally abused with remarks targeting Sant Ji and the Sikh faith.
The incident began when his vehicle lightly brushed another car near Jagraon Bridge. Ranjodh Singh says he accepted responsibility and offered to pay for damages, but the other occupants — reportedly including a journalist — harassed him and objected to the Photo of Sant Ji, allegedly saying they would “teach him a lesson.” They then called the police.
At Division Number 8 police post (Ghumar Mandi Chowki), officers allegedly acted under the complainants’ influence, detained the youth, and made derogatory remarks about Sant Ji. When he protested, the beating intensified.
Police Response and FIRs
Following hours-long protests at Bharat Nagar Chowk by taxi unions and Sikh organisations, police registered two FIRs.
• The first names civilians Rajiv Gupta, Ajay Sharma, and one unidentified person under Sections 298, 115(2), and 126(2).
• The second names head constables Lovepreet Singh (two individuals), constable Rohit, and Home Guard volunteer Deepak Kumar.
Ranjodh Singh was presented publicly during the protest, showing visible injuries. Akal Takht Secretariat media adviser Jaskaran Singh said the FIRs followed intervention by Jathedar Kuldip Singh Gargaj, who contacted Commissioner Swapan Sharma after reviewing the victim’s video.
The case has revived concerns about past patterns of police bias and excessive force against Sikh youth. The investigation is ongoing.
ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ, ਪੰਜਾਬ: 26 ਜਨਵਰੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਇੱਕ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਸਿੱਖ ਉਬਰ ਡਰਾਈਵਰ ਰਣਜੋਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹਲਕੇ ਟ੍ਰੈਫ਼ਿਕ ਟੱਕਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਕਰਮਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਬੇਰਹਿਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰਿਆ-ਪੀਟਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਦਾਅਵਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਹਮਲਾ ਉਸਦੀ ਗੱਡੀ ‘ਤੇ ਲੱਗੀ ਸੰਤ ਜਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਭਿੰਡਰਾਂਵਾਲੇ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਕਾਰਨ ਭੜਕਿਆ। ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿੱਠ, ਪੱਸਲੀਆਂ, ਸਿਰ, ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਲਿਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਂਗਲਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਆਈਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹਮਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਤੁਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਘਸੀਟਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਠੰਡੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ‘ਤੇ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਡੰਡਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੰਦੇ ਟਿੱਪਣੀਆਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ।
ਘਟਨਾ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਜਗਰਾਓਂ ਪੁਲ ‘ਨੇੜੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਗੱਡੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਦੂਜੀ ਗੱਡੀ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੀ। ਰਣਜੋਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਗਲਤੀ ਮੰਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਭਰਪਾਈ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਾਲੇ — ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੇ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ — ਉਸਨੂੰ ਤੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਗੱਡੀ ‘ਤੇ ਲੱਗੀ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ ਕੀਤਾ। ਦਾਅਵਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਇਸ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਬਕ ਸਿਖਾਵਾਂਗੇ,” ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ।
ਡਿਵਿਜ਼ਨ ਨੰਬਰ 8 (ਘੁਮਾਰ ਮੰਡੀ ਚੌਕੀ) ‘ਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ‘ਤੇ, ਰਣਜੋਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤਕਰਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਅਪਮਾਨਜਨਕ ਟਿੱਪਣੀਆਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਕੀਤਾ, ਮਾਰਪੀਟ ਹੋਰ ਵੱਧ ਗਈ।

ਭਾਰਤ ਨਗਰ ਚੌਂਕ ‘ਤੇ ਟੈਕਸੀ ਯੂਨੀਅਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਲੰਬੇ ਰੋਸ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਦੋ ਐਫ਼.ਆਈ.ਆਰ. ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ।
ਰਣਜੋਧ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਜਨਤਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਹਾਲਤ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਸੀ। ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਕੱਤਰਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਸਲਾਹਕਾਰ ਜਸਕਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਜਥੇਦਾਰ ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਗਰਗਾਜ਼ ਦੀ ਦਖ਼ਲਅੰਦਾਜ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੋਈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੀੜਤ ਦੀ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰ ਸਵਪਨ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਕੀਤਾ।
