Some people have doubts, saying, “You claim that Dhruv and Prahlad’s spiritual status was very high, but they did not attain ‘Satnam.’ Yet, there is a verse in Gurbani that says, ‘ਰਾਮ ਜਪਉ ਜੀਅ ਐਸੇ ਐਸੇ ॥ Does this mean we should chant the same name that they chanted?”
The verse does encourage us to chant the Name in the same way that Prahlad did, with the same devotion and focus. However, it does not mean that we should chant the exact same name that Dhruv and Prahlad chanted.
Dhruv and Prahlad chanted the Name with great determination and focus. They remained fearless in the face of suffering and hardships caused by evil people. They made chanting the Name their only goal, day and night, giving up all other actions and staying firm in their faith.
This verse from Gurbani shows us the strong determination and unshakeable faith of Dhruv and Prahlad when they chanted the Name. It means that just like young Dhruv and Prahlad, who developed a deep love and trust in chanting the Name with pure devotion day and night, we too should be just as committed to chanting the Naam.
According to the Gurvaak “ਸੇਵਾ ਥੋਰੀ ਮਾਗਨੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ॥” If one engages in devotion but only a little bit, while keeping the desire for the highest spiritual state, this kind of effort in chanting the Name is not complete; it is only partial. We should learn from the example of Dhruv and Prahlad to have determination and firm faith in the practice of devotion, but it does not mean that we must chant the exact same name they chanted.
When using an example, we should only accept the specific aspect that the example is intended to highlight, not everything about it.
In Gurbani, for those who cultivate love for the Lord (ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ), many different examples are given in various places to instill virtues according to Gurmat.
O mind, love the Lord, as the lotus loves the water.
O mind, love the Lord, as the fish loves the water.
O mind, love the Lord, as the song-bird loves the rain.
O mind, love the Lord, as the water loves the milk.
– Guru Granth Sahib Ji: Ang 524
In Gurbani, many different examples are given to show the depth of true love and devotion. However, to interpret these examples to mean that love for the Lord (“ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ) or love for the Lord’s Name is the same as worldly love is incorrect. For instance, comparing the love of a fish for water, a bird for rain, a deer for sound, or a bee for a flower to spiritual love is a misunderstanding of the true teaching.
The hungry man is not ashamed to eat.

Just so, the humble servant of the Lord sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

as milk is joined to water, as food is to the very hungry man,
and as the mother loves her son, So does Nanak, he constantly remembers the Lord in meditation. ||7||
As the moth falls into the lamp, as the thief steals without hesitation,
as the elephant is trapped by its sexual urges, as the sinner is caught in his sins,
as the gambler’s addiction does not leave him, So, is this mind of Nanak’s attached to the Lord. ||8||
As the deer loves the sound of the bell, and as the song-bird longs for the rain,
the Lord’s humble servant lives in the Society of the Saints, lovingly meditating and vibrating upon the Lord of the Universe.
My tongue chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. ||9||
– Guru Granth Sahib Ji: Ang 838
In the verses provided above, various examples of worldly love are used to explain what true spiritual love is, but they do not endorse worldly love itself. Worldly love, which is based on personal attachment and desires, is not supported by the Gurmat.
Similarly, the verse “ਰਾਮ ਜਪਉ ਜੀਅ ਐਸੇ ਐਸੇ ” is meant to emphasize how to chant the Name with true devotion, It is not intended to compare the Satnam with Kirtam names.
