Sri Sukhmani Sahib holds a special place in the hearts of devout Sikhs. This sacred Bani, composed by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, offers immense spiritual benefits and serves as a guiding light for individuals seeking solace and connection with Waheguru. For those committed to Sikhi, incorporating the daily recitation of Sri Sukhmani Sahib into their routine is essential. The lives of many Chardikala Sikhs demonstrate the transformative impact of this practice.
Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Ji, a revered Gursikh, embraced the continuous recitation of Naam and Sri Sukhmani Sahib after taking Amrit. He dedicated his days and nights to this practice, often completing multiple recitations of Sri Sukhmani Sahib daily. Similarly, other prominent figures, such as Sant Attar Singh Ji Mastuana Sahib, Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindranwale, and Bhai Veer Singh Ji, emphasized the importance of this Bani. Baba Nand Singh Ji described Sri Sukhmani Sahib as the ultimate remedy against the illusions of Maya and the temptations of Kalyug, highlighting its unparalleled spiritual value.
While Sri Sukhmani Sahib is lengthy, its recitation becomes effortless with regular practice. This Bani comprises 24 sections called Ashtapadis, each beginning with a Salok. Every Ashtapadi contains eight stanzas, totaling 1975 lines. Despite its extensive structure, the verses are written in simple language, allowing for easy comprehension and meditation.
For those engaged in Naam Jap, reciting Sri Sukhmani Sahib beforehand greatly aids in focusing the mind and enhancing concentration. It serves as a preparatory step that aligns the soul with the divine vibrations of Naam.
Overcoming Drowsiness During Naam Jap
Many individuals face drowsiness during Naam Jap, especially in the initial stages of their spiritual journey. Reciting Sri Sukhmani Sahib alongside Naam Jap helps to counteract this challenge, keeping the practitioner alert and engaged. Gursikhs who incorporate this practice into their routine report heightened concentration and spiritual clarity.
Spiritual and Worldly Advantages
The blessings of Sri Sukhmani Sahib extend beyond the spiritual realm. History bears witness to its transformative effects on both Sikhs and non-Sikhs. People have experienced profound mental satisfaction, physical well-being, and worldly success through its recitation. Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s words in the final Ashtapadi of this Bani emphasize that those who recite it with love and devotion are relieved of the pains of birth and death. Their fears, doubts, and diseases dissipate, and they achieve a state of divine mindfulness.
Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Ji shared a compelling account of the power of Sri Sukhmani Sahib. His cousin, Tek Singh, suffered from tuberculosis and experienced terrifying visions of yamas (death messengers) during his final days. Bhai Sahib, newly initiated and deeply engrossed in Naam and Sri Sukhmani Sahib recitations, was called to visit Tek Singh. Upon his arrival, Tek Singh’s terror subsided, and he found peace in Bhai Sahib’s presence.
Bhai Sahib continued reciting Sri Sukhmani Sahib for Tek Singh, bringing him immense relief. Even after Bhai Sahib’s departure, the recitation of this Bani by family members ensured Tek Singh’s peaceful passing. This incident reinforced Bhai Sahib’s faith in the efficacy of Gurbani, particularly Sri Sukhmani Sahib, as a powerful tool to dispel fear and suffering.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s words beautifully capture the essence of Sri Sukhmani Sahib:
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥
The Word of the Guru is eternal. The Word of the Guru cuts the noose of death.
This Bani is a true “Sukhmani”—a jewel of bliss. Regular recitation fosters spiritual growth, eradicates suffering, and brings fulfillment. For anyone seeking a deeper connection with Waheguru and relief from worldly challenges, making Sri Sukhmani Sahib a daily habit is indispensable.
The practice of reciting Sri Sukhmani Sahib transforms lives, offering peace, clarity, and spiritual elevation. Whether you are a devout Sikh or someone exploring spirituality, embracing this Bani can unlock a world of divine blessings. Let us honor this sacred gift by dedicating time each day to its recitation and experiencing the boundless grace of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
Baba Nand Singh Ji would listen to 5 Sukhmani Sahib Paaths every day. Baba Nand Singh has said the way to defeat Kalyug is by reading and listening to Sri Sukhmani Sahib. Kalyug themselves said to Baba Nand Singh, there is one thing I can't bear and that is Sri Sukhmani Sahib, Baba ji laughed and said you yourself have given us the solution to the problem, Ever since then, Baba Nand Singh Ji started 24 hour Sri Sukhmani Sahib Jaap at Nanaksar Kaleran.
Bhai Rama Singh Ji of UK has written very beautifully about the greatness of Sri Sukhmani Sahib in his book. He writes that his boss who was a Hindu, used to tell him that he became a diplomat from a mere servant because he started the nitnem of Sri Sukhmani Sahib. His boss used to be a very low grade servant and someone told him to do Sri Sukhmani Sahib. As soon as he started doing Sri Sukhmani Sahib, he started rising career-wise. Soon he became a senior diplomat for India.
Mahakavi Bhai Santokh Singh Ji writes: "Satguru Arjan Dev Ji, seated at the revered place of Manji Sahib in Gurudwara Sri Ramsar Sahib, composed 'Sukhmani Sahib' and revealed that any Sikh who wakes up at the Amrit Vela and recites 'Sukhmani Sahib' will have their 24,000 breaths successful, all sins committed day and night will be eradicated, and they will be saved from the cycle of birth and death."
If you already do Sukhmani Sahib once a day, try to increase it. If you don't do it, you should try and do at least one paath of Sukhmani Sahib every day.
Bhai Atma Singh Ji Panjokhra Sahib was a companion of Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh. As soon as he used to wake up Sri Sukhmani Sahib used to start in his surtee (mind) and he used to complete it in 15 minutes. Bhai Sahib would say that a Gursikh who does not do Sri Sukhmani Sahib paath everyday cannot be classified as a "Laadla Singh" (Loving Singh) of Sri Guru Dasmesh Ji.
