The Math Mistake in the Quran’s Inheritance Rules

Many people believe that the Quran is a perfect book from God with no mistakes at all. But when we take a closer look at the math in the inheritance rules, something strange happens.

The Quran: Surah An-Nisa (Chapter 4), verses 11 and 12 give exact fractions to different family members when someone dies. But in one example, those fractions add up to more than 100%, which is not possible.

Let’s understand this with a simple example using $100.

Imagine Someone Dies and Leaves $100

This person leaves behind:

  • 2 daughters
  • A mother
  • A father
  • A wife

The Quran says:

  • The 2 daughters get two-thirds (2/3) of the money
  • The mother gets one-sixth (1/6)
  • The father gets one-sixth (1/6)
  • The wife gets one-eighth (1/8)
Let’s Do the Math

Let’s give out the $100 based on what the Quran says:

  • 2/3 of $100 = $66.67 for the daughters

  • 1/6 of $100 = $16.67 for the mom

  • 1/6 of $100 = $16.67 for the dad

  • 1/8 of $100 = $12.50 for the wife

Now let’s add all of this:

66.67+16.67+16.67+12.50=112.51

But wait. The person only had $100, not $112.51. This means the Quran gave out more money than actually existed, which is a mistake in the math.

What Did People Do About It?

When scholars saw this problem, they said:

“Let’s reduce everyone’s share just a little so the total becomes exactly $100 instead of $112.51.”

This adjustment is called Awl.

But here is something important to think about. If God gave exact amounts to each person, then why did people need to change those amounts later?

Why This Is a Big Deal

If the Quran is really from the One True God, and God knows everything, then there should not be any mistakes in it. Not even small ones.

This math problem shows that the instructions in the Quran can lead to a total that is more than 100%, which is not possible. That is a clear sign of error.

If someone tells you that a book is perfect and comes from God, you expect everything in it to be correct, especially something as basic as math.

But in this case, the Quran gives rules for dividing money that don’t add up properly. It gives out more than 100%, which is not possible in real life. People later had to come up with their own fix to make it work.

If humans have to fix something that is supposed to come from a perfect God, then it shows that the book has a mistake. And if there is a mistake, then it means that book cannot be from the One True God, who never makes mistakes.

So this shows something very simple. If the Quran makes a mistake in math, then it cannot be perfect, and if it is not perfect, then it cannot be from the all-knowing True God.
